FEAR:

“What if God’s promises don’t line up with my reality?”

THE HOW: Remember the march isn’t forever. God knows how your walls are coming down, but He still requires faith and obedience. No matter what stands before you today, you can believe in God’s promises that haven’t happened yet as if they already have—solely because He said they would.[5]

WHAT’S THE FIRST STEP TO TAKE WHEN I HIT A WALL? Seek the Lord’s instruction. The Bible is relevant to all areas of life, and the more you learn His promises and the names He’s given you, the more you can stand strong in the wait, through the monotony, and while stuck on the outside.

JOSHUA KNEW THE WHOLE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS. What do I do when I’m unsure when and what the Lord has for me? You follow the example of the rest of the Israelites. Instead of grumbling about His timing, getting annoyed over the execution of the plan, and feeling impatient with the seemingly fruitless hoops you have to jump through in the meantime, keep marching forward in full faith—not focusing on what you want to happen, but on God’s hand and prevailing promises.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH DETAILS TO SHARE WITH OTHERS AND WHICH TO KEEP TO MYSELF? Have you been able to trust these individuals with information in the past—or have they allowed fear or doubt to dictate their response and influence? If so, learn from that. Above all, ask our generous God for discernment. You can be sure that when you ask for wisdom, “he will give it to you” generously, without finding fault (James 1:5).

WHAT IF I DON’T SEE ANY PROGRESS? You may not. It’s not as if the Israelites saw a layer of brick chip off after each lap around Jericho. No, they woke up and carried out the same act of obedience, day in and day out for six days, prepared for more if need be. Although day seven was when the walls crashed down, it started out like all the days before it. We cannot anticipate God’s timing because His ways are not like ours—but we can choose to be faithful even when the walls are still standing. Then, “if you walk every lap like it’s your last, one day, you will be right. . . . Don’t stop on six.”[6]
